We’ve been seeing postcards from churches that are mailed via Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM). And, at first glance, we understand how this might be an attractive option for churches or non-profit organizations looking to reach their audience using mail. But, in reality, traditional non-profit mail is a better choice for a number of reasons.
EDDM Retail ("Every Door Direct Mail") is a United States Postal Service program that allows organizations to mail to homes and businesses within their area without addressing every single postcard. It might be a nice solution for small businesses who only want to mail small quantities meeting specific requirements, but churches and non-profits should rethink this strategy. Here are just a few reasons why churches and non-profit organizations should send their messages using Traditional Non-Profit Direct Mail instead of Every Door Direct…
Non-Profit Direct Mail is Less Expensive Than EDDM
Let’s get right to it. The cost of a project should always be an important factor in the marketing channels you choose for your church or non-profit. While EDDM offers postal rates significantly lower than 1st Class Postage, EDDM rates are still TWICE the postage rates available to qualified churches and non-profit organizations through Traditional Non-Profit Direct Mail. So by sending your message via Traditional Non-Profit Direct Mail, your church can save significantly on your postal rates. You don’t need to buy a postal permit to get these great rates, but you do need to be approved as a “Non-Profit Mailer” by the United States Postal Service. We can help you with this! Traditional Non-Profit Direct Mail is Less Time Consuming Than EDDM
Some churches choose EDDM because they can do it themselves. But that also means you have to learn all of the specific requirements and then make sure that you implement your mail job exactly to these specifications as set by the Post Office. And what does that take? Time… lots of it! Even small mistakes can lead to your mail being misdirected or even refused by the Post Office. EDDM jobs must be bundled in stacks of 50-100 pieces with a “facing slip” on top of each bundle telling the Post Office where that bundle should go. If the facing slip becomes separated from its bundle, it will be very difficult or even impossible for the Post Office to determine where those pieces were meant to be delivered because the pieces themselves have no addresses. Hiring a professional mail house to send your message via Traditional Non-Profit Direct Mail means that every piece of your mail is addressed and processed efficiently. This frees you up to focus on other important aspects of your church.
It's Easier to Reach More People With Traditional Direct Mail
Retail Every Door Direct limits you to sending out 5,000 pieces per zip code each day. There is no limit to the number of pieces that you can send out via Traditional Non-Profit Direct Mail. So, if you wanted to send out 20,000 postcards to the homes surrounding your church, you would have to complete at least 4 separate mailings using EDDM. A mailing to 50,000 homes around your church would require 10 EDDM mailings. Sending your message via Traditional Non-Profit Direct Mail means that all of these pieces can be sent in one mailing. Maximum efficiency!
You Have More Options And Can Be More Creative With Traditional Direct Mail
The EDDM program has very specific requirements regarding the size of its mail pieces, limiting the creativity of mailers who use it. With Traditional Non-Profit Direct Mail, you choose the size of your mailer… from small 4×6″ postcards to large 8.5×11″ flat mailers… you select a size that will convey your message while staying within your budget. You can select a radius mailing which sends to every resident within a selected distance from your location, a zip code mailing which mails to every resident within selected zip codes, a carrier-route mailing that reaches all residents within a postal carrier’s specific route, or even selected residences within any of these. Sending your message using Traditional Non-Profit Direct Mail means you have complete control over the options without having to do any of the work yourself.
At Right On The Money, we specialize in Church and Non-Profit Direct Mail. Our experience in Church Mail began when we served on the launch team for a local church in 2008. Since that time, we are happy to say that we have helped many Churches and Non-Profit Organizations spread their messages. All of the pieces we process include full addresses and intelligent mail barcodes, so even if someone in the Post Office accidentally drops a tray, that mail can easily be delivered without delay.
